If you think that you can wash your acne away, then you are wrong. Many kids and teenagers use hot water, a washcloth and a drying soap in an effort to get rid of their pimples. That won’t work, most dermatologists say.

Acne has nothing to do with cleanliness. You can wash your face several times a day and still have acne. This is because washing your face removes the oils from the surface of the skin, but not from within the plugged ducts. It is possible to suffer from acne and dry skin at the same time.

To avoid having dry skin, use a mild soap such as Neutrogena or Dove Unscented. Rub lightly into your skin using your fingertips and lukewarm water. Don’t use a washcloth or anything that might irritate your skin.

Over-the-counter products containing benzyl peroxide can be helpful in fighting acne. Benzyl peroxide helps break up the plug of dead skin cells, bacteria and oil in pores. It also controls bacteria.

Start using an over-the-counter product with the lowest concentration of benzyl peroxide, and then work your way up to higher concentrations. This is especially important if you have sensitive skin, since a higher concentration of benzyl peroxide may irritate your skin. Use it once or twice a day, and apply a moisturizer if necessary.
